Brief Summary- After attacking Connor, Jurgis is arrested and sentenced to jail. Jurgis is forced to walk down a hall in front of other cell mates completely naked where he is ridiculed. Jurgis is then put in a small cell with a bug infested bed. While in his cell Jurgis hears bells ringing realizing it was Christmas eve and that a year ago he and Ona were walking in Packington admiring the city. Jurgis cries for the he has left his family sick and alone for Christmas. Jurgis feels that the Christmas bells are mocking him.
